Manchester United have sent an “emphatic” message to Barcelona: the €30 million (£26m) buy option for Marcus Rashford must be paid in full, or the player returns to England.
Despite Rashford’s outstanding form in Spain (10 goals and 13 assists this season), Barcelona have opened internal talks to lower the fee, citing their ongoing financial constraints and La Liga’s strict salary cap.
The Current Standoff
- Barça’s Strategy: The Catalan club is hoping to leverage Rashford’s desire to stay at the Camp Nou to force a lower fixed fee, potentially around €20–22 million, or a restructured payment plan.
- United’s Refusal: INEOS and the United board are reportedly “puzzled” by the request. They believe the €30m figure is already a “steal” given Rashford’s market value has rebounded toward €50 million.
- The Salary Factor: Rashford’s £315,000-per-week United wage remains a major hurdle. Barcelona covered his full (reduced) salary during the loan, but a permanent move requires a significant long-term wage adjustment to fit Barça’s 2026/27 budget.
United’s hierarchy has made it clear: there will be no re-negotiation. Barcelona must either trigger the clause as agreed or risk losing the player to other European suitors in June.
