Jadon Sancho’s loan spell at Chelsea is set to conclude at the end of June, with the winger returning to Manchester United.

The main stumbling block for a permanent transfer to Stamford Bridge was reportedly his high salary, which Chelsea was unwilling to match.

Despite an obligation to buy clause in the initial loan agreement, believed to be around £25 million if Chelsea finished higher than 14th in the Premier League (which they did), negotiations over personal terms between Chelsea and Sancho’s representatives ultimately broke down.

Chelsea’s strict wage structure reportedly prevented them from agreeing to a contract that would meet Sancho’s current Manchester United salary, which is understood to be a significant figure, potentially around £300,000 per week.

As a result, Chelsea will now pay a £5 million penalty to Manchester United to release themselves from the obligation to sign Sancho permanently.

While Sancho did contribute to Chelsea’s successful season, including winning the Conference League and helping them finish fourth in the Premier League, his future lies away from West London.

Sancho will now return to Manchester United, where he has a year remaining on his lucrative contract.

However, a future at Old Trafford appears highly unlikely, as manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly not keen on reintegrating him into the squad.

Manchester United are expected to actively seek a new move for Sancho this summer, with interest from clubs both in England and across Europe.
