Miami, USA – Inter Miami have reportedly initiated talks with Atlético Madrid for a potential deal to sign World Cup-winning midfielder Rodrigo de Paul.
The MLS club is keen to maintain its high ambitions following their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup, with the Argentine international identified as a primary target.
Sources indicate that Rodrigo de Paul, 31, is “open to the move” to Inter Miami, with discussions between his representatives and the MLS franchise already underway.
The prospect of reuniting with long-time Argentina teammate and close friend Lionel Messi at club level is understood to be a significant draw for de Paul.
Inter Miami’s strategy appears to be multifaceted: they aim to sign de Paul this summer in a direct transfer from Atlético Madrid.
However, if a deal cannot be struck now, they are prepared to wait and pursue him as a free agent in June 2026, when his current contract with the Spanish club expires.
De Paul has been a vital component of Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid side since his €35 million transfer from Udinese in 2021. He has made 187 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 26 assists.
However, with just one year remaining on his contract and contract extension talks reportedly stalling over salary and deal length, Atlético Madrid is said to be open to his sale, with a reported valuation of around €15-17 million.
The arrival of a player of de Paul’s caliber would significantly bolster Inter Miami’s midfield, potentially filling a void should Sergio Busquets (who turns 37 this month) decide to move on or retire.
De Paul’s relentless energy, defensive contributions, and playmaking abilities are seen as essential to support Messi and maintain the team’s balance, especially as Luis Suárez may also depart at the end of the year.
This pursuit underscores Inter Miami’s aggressive recruitment policy as they continue to build a formidable squad around their Argentine core, aiming for sustained success in MLS and beyond.
Discussions between the clubs are ongoing, with all eyes on whether Inter Miami can secure the World Cup champion this summer.
