FC Porto have officially confirmed every football fan’s worst nightmare: Samu Omorodion has suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

DEVASTATING NEWS: Samu Omorodion Torns ACL

The injury occurred during the first half of Monday’s 1-1 Clássico draw against Sporting CP at the Estádio do Dragão.

The 21-year-old Spaniard, who has been in world-class form this season, was forced off at halftime after twice complaining of pain. Following intensive medical examinations today, the club released a statement confirming the severity of the damage.

The Medical Outlook

  • The Injury: A torn ACL in the right knee.
  • The Timeline: Samu is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days. The standard recovery period for such an injury is 7 to 9 months, meaning he is officially out for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
  • The World Cup Blow: Tragically, this timeline effectively rules him out of the 2026 World Cup in North America this summer. He had become a “locked-in” favorite for Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad.

Impact on Porto & The Market
This is a massive blow for Porto’s title race and European ambitions. Samu has been arguably the most prolific striker in Europe this term:

  • 2025/26 Stats: 20 goals and 1 assist in 31 appearances across all competitions.
  • Transfer Fallout: The injury immediately halts interest from the Premier League. Tottenham, Chelsea, and Newcastle were all reportedly preparing massive bids (some exceeding €80m) for the summer window. Those plans are now on indefinite hold.

Farioli’s Dilemma

Manager Francesco Farioli must now navigate the final months of the season without his talisman.

  • Deniz Gül, who replaced Samu against Sporting, is expected to step up.
  • Terem Moffi remains a key option, though he was surprisingly left on the bench on Monday.
  • André Villas-Boas and the Porto board may now look toward the “free agent” market or internal youth promotions to provide cover, as the Portuguese window is effectively closed for major incoming deals.

“We are all with you, Samu. You will come back stronger than ever. The Dragon family never lets its own fight alone.” — Official FC Porto Statement
