Iran and New Zealand played out an incredibly absorbing 2-2 draw in their Group G opener at the SoFi Stadium in California. Played against a heavily intense, politically charged backdrop, the match delivered elite footballing drama as Team Melli dug deep to twice claw their way back from a goal down.

Elijah Just Stuns the Stadium
The All Whites burst out of the blocks with intent, hunting down an elusive first-ever World Cup victory. It took them just seven minutes to shock the 70,000-strong crowd:
- 7th Minute: Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood used his immense physical presence to hold up a long ball, teeing up Motherwell winger Elijah Just, who guided a sublime first-time volley past Alireza Beiranvand.
- 32nd Minute: Iran weathered the early storm and hit back. After a 20-yard effort from Mehdi Taremi rattled the woodwork, defender Ramin Rezaeian reacted quickest inside the six-yard box to poke home a loose rebound.
Mohebi Rescues Team Melli
The tactical chess match continued immediately after the half-time break. In the 54th minute, the lethal Wood-Just partnership struck again. Wood clipped an exquisite pass over the top to release Just, who calmly lifted a clinical finish over the advancing keeper to pick up his second of the night.
However, Iran’s resilient spirit wouldn’t be broken. Just ten minutes later, star-man Rezaeian turned provider, delivering an absolutely pinpoint cross to the back post. Mohammad Mohebi timed his leap to perfection, powering a thumping header in off the inside of the far post to seal a final 2-2 deadlock.
The hard-fought draw leaves Group G perfectly balanced on opening day, following Belgium and Egypt’s 1-1 draw earlier in the evening. New Zealand will look to carry this momentum to Vancouver on June 21 against Egypt, while Iran returns to SoFi Stadium to challenge Belgium.
