Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. has made a surprising revelation, confirming that he was “close to joining Fluminense for the FIFA Club World Cup” recently, describing it as a “serious chance.”

However, the former Barcelona and PSG forward ultimately decided against the move, prioritizing his ongoing recovery.

“I decided not to proceed and stay at Santos to recover as I’m not 100% fit yet and I want to be in my best condition as soon as possible,” Neymar stated.

Fluminense, as the reigning Copa Libertadores champions, secured a spot in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

Reports had circulated about their interest in bringing in a high-profile player for the tournament, with Neymar being a prime target.

Club president Mário Bittencourt had even publicly confirmed talks with Neymar’s camp regarding a short-term loan specifically for the competition.

Neymar’s decision underscores his commitment to regaining full fitness after a period plagued by injuries.

His current contract with Santos is set to expire on June 30, 2025, and while negotiations for an extension are reportedly underway, his immediate focus appears to be solely on his physical rehabilitation.

The 33-year-old, who returned to his boyhood club Santos earlier this year, is determined to be in peak condition, particularly with an eye on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His choice to forgo the Club World Cup, despite the allure of the global stage, highlights the serious nature of his recovery and his long-term ambitions in the sport.
