Barcelona’s teenage sensation Pau Cubarsí has fronted up to supporters following a devastating night at the Spotify Camp Nou.

"I Take Responsibility": Pau Cubarsí Breaks Silence After Game-Changing Red Card vs. Atlético

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the 19-year-old defender issued a heartfelt apology after his first-half dismissal paved the way for a 0–2 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

“One action determines the match and affects the outcome. That’s how football is, and I take responsibility for what happened,” Cubarsí wrote. “There’s still a road ahead for us to travel; we are more united than ever: we are a family, and we’ve always proven that.”

The Moment the Tie Swung

The complexion of the match shifted dramatically in the 43rd minute. After a lightning-fast Atlético counter-attack, Cubarsí was adjudged to be the “last man” when he brought down Giuliano Simeone on the edge of the area.
Initially, referee Istvan Kovacs brandished a yellow card, but a VAR intervention prompted a pitchside review. Kovacs subsequently upgraded the card to a straight red, leaving Hansi Flick’s side with 10 men for more than half the match.

The Aftermath

The punishment was doubly painful for the Blaugrana:

  • Immediate Goal: From the resulting free-kick, Julián Álvarez curled a sublime strike into the top corner to give the visitors the lead.
  • Second Goal: Alexander Sørloth doubled the advantage later in the match, putting Diego Simeone’s side in a commanding position.
  • Suspension: Cubarsí will now be suspended for the second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano next Tuesday, April 14.

Flick’s Fury and Squad Unity

While Cubarsí was quick to own his error, manager Hansi Flick was reportedly livid with the officiating, specifically regarding a potential penalty for a handball by Marc Pubill that went unpunished.

Despite the 2–0 deficit and the loss of their star defender, the mood within the camp remains defiant. In addition to Cubarsí’s post, Lamine Yamal also shared a message of hope: “This isn’t over, Culers. We’ll give it our all in the return game. All together, always.”

Barcelona now face the daunting task of needing a two-goal victory in Madrid to keep their European dreams alive—and they’ll have to do it without the “jewel” of their defense.
