In a massive shake-up in Brazilian football, Atlético Mineiro officially announced on Friday, May 1, 2026, the termination of Hulk’s contract by mutual consent.

The 39-year-old forward, who has become a living legend in Belo Horizonte, is now set to join Fluminense on a free transfer.

Hulk Bids Farewell to Atlético Mineiro Ahead of Fluminense Move

The Details of the Deal

  • The Move: Hulk has a verbal agreement to join Fluminense on a contract that will run until December 2027.
  • Contract Details: The deal is reportedly for one and a half years, with an option to extend for an additional season based on performance targets.
  • The Wait: While the move is practically sealed, Hulk will only be able to officially debut for Fluminense in July, once the Brazilian transfer window reopens following the World Cup.
  • The Farewell: Atlético Mineiro will host a grand farewell ceremony for the “No. 7” on May 10 at Arena MRV, prior to their match against Botafogo. The club has also promised him a testimonial match upon his ultimate retirement.

Legacy of a “Galo” Giant

Hulk leaves Atlético Mineiro as one of the most decorated and beloved figures in the club’s history. Since joining in 2021, his impact has been monumental:

  • Stats: 140 goals and 56 assists in 311 appearances.
  • Silverware: A key architect of the 2021 “Double” (Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil), the 2022 Supercopa do Brasil, and five consecutive state titles (2021–2025).
In an emotional statement, a tearful Hulk told supporters:

“I’m taking with me much more than titles; I’m taking a connection that changed my life. Galo and the Massa Atleticana made me feel at home from the very first day, and I will be eternally grateful to this club I learned to love.”

A New Challenge in Rio

The move to Fluminense represents a bold final chapter for the veteran striker.

Under manager Luis Zubeldía, Hulk is expected to provide veteran leadership and a physical presence in an attack already boasting significant experience.

For Fluminense, securing a player of Hulk’s caliber on a free transfer is seen as a major coup as they look to compete across all fronts in the second half of the year.

With Hulk joining Fluminense’s veteran-heavy squad, do you think his arrival will be the final piece needed for them to challenge for another Copa Libertadores title, or is the 39-year-old’s best football now behind him?
