Real Madrid have officially confirmed that Ferland Mendy underwent successful surgery on Monday, May 11, 2026, to repair a severe injury to the rectus femoris tendon in his right leg.

The procedure, performed in Lyon under the supervision of the club’s medical services, marks the beginning of a long road to recovery for the French international.

The Surgery and Recovery Timeline

The operation was necessitated after conservative treatments failed to address a “complete tendon detachment” suffered during the opening minutes of Madrid’s match against Espanyol on May 3.

  • The Procedure: Specialists in France performed the surgery to reattach the tendon to the bone.
  • Initial Timeline: While early fears suggested a full calendar year on the sidelines, more optimistic medical sources now estimate a recovery period of three to six months, potentially allowing him to return before the end of the 2026 calendar year.
  • Rehabilitation: Mendy is expected to remain in France for the initial stage of his physiotherapy before returning to Valdebebas to continue his recovery.

Dismissing the Retirement Rumors

Despite sensationalist reports from some Spanish outlets—most notably Cadena COPE—suggesting that the 30-year-old was considering an early retirement due to the “career-threatening” nature of the injury, sources close to the player have firmly denied these claims.

  • Fabrizio Romano’s Update: The Italian journalist confirmed that Mendy is “absolutely NOT thinking about retirement” and remains fully committed to seeing out his contract, which runs until June 2028.
  • Mental Fortitude: Those within the player’s camp describe him as “determined” to overcome this latest setback, which was his fifth injury of a frustrating 2025/26 campaign that limited him to just nine appearances.

Real Madrid’s Transfer Dilemma

Mendy’s long-term absence leaves a significant void at left-back for manager Álvaro Arbeloa.

  • Immediate Cover: Fran García is expected to deputize for the remainder of the season, including the upcoming El Clásico.
  • Summer Plans: With Mendy likely out for the start of the 2026/27 season, the board is reportedly accelerating plans to sign a high-profile replacement, with Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) and Theo Hernández (AC Milan) once again surfacing as primary targets.
With Mendy out for at least the next few months and retirement rumors put to bed, do you think Real Madrid should invest in a world-class left-back this summer, or trust Fran García to hold the position until Mendy is fit to return?
