The sudden resignation of Javier Mascherano earlier this week sent shockwaves through Fort Lauderdale, but Inter Miami has moved quickly to ensure stability.

Guillermo Hoyos Takes Charge of Inter Miami’s Interim Era

As the club navigates the immediate aftermath of Mascherano’s departure, leadership has confirmed that they will not be rushing into a permanent appointment.

Instead, former Sporting Director Guillermo Hoyos has been tasked with leading the team on an interim basis.

The “Mentor” Steps In

For those closely following the club, the appointment of Hoyos is a logical, if unplanned, solution.

With a relationship with Lionel Messi spanning over two decades—dating back to Hoyos’s time as a youth coach at Barcelona—he brings an immediate level of familiarity and respect to the dressing room.

However, Hoyos is adamant that he is there to do a job, not just rekindle old times. Addressing the media during his first press conference, the 62-year-old was clear about the boundaries:

“Friendship is non-negotiable. We share a friendship that spans many years. However, that friendship does not mean that we will be constantly hovering over him or in his face every single day. Being on the field with the greatest player in history is extraordinary, but we have a job to do.”

A Short-Term Strategy

The club’s hierarchy is prioritizing continuity during a critical phase of the season. With only a few months left before the Leagues Cup begins in August, the objective is clear: maintain the rhythm that saw Miami secure their first MLS Cup title last year.

Insiders suggest that the club is looking at a “mid-year” reset.

While Hoyos has been granted the opportunity to prove himself and steer the ship, the search for a permanent successor remains active in the background.

Names such as Xavi Hernández and Marcelo Gallardo have already been floated as potential long-term candidates, but the board is determined to avoid knee-jerk reactions, preferring to make a definitive decision once the summer window opens.

The Road Ahead

After seven rounds, Inter Miami sits in a solid third place in the MLS Eastern Conference. The immediate focus for Hoyos is the upcoming fixture against the Colorado Rapids—a game that will serve as the first real test of his ability to manage the squad under the spotlight.

For the Herons, it is a period of transition, but also one of potential.

With the structure already in place and a squad featuring some of the world’s best, the interim period is not about rebuilding, but about maintaining the high standards set by the previous regime.
