The city of Porto is draped in blue and white as FC Porto officially clinched the 2025–26 Primeira Liga title on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Alverca at the Estádio do Dragão sealed the championship with two matches to spare, ending a four-year drought for the storied club.

FC Porto Reclaim Portuguese Throne with 31st Title

The Title-Winning Moment

In a match defined by high tension and atmospheric celebrations, the decisive moment arrived in the 40th minute:

  • The Goal: Polish defender Jan Bednarek rose highest to meet a precision corner from Gabri Veiga, powering a header into the net that sparked scenes of jubilation across the Dragão.
  • The Math: The win took Porto to 85 points, moving them nine points clear of second-placed Benfica—who were held to a 2-2 draw by Famalicão—making them mathematically impossible to catch.
  • The Significance: This is Porto’s 31st league title, and it marks the 87th official trophy in the club’s history.

The Farioli & Villas-Boas Era

The triumph is a major validation for the new leadership structure at the club:

  • André Villas-Boas: After winning the treble as Porto’s manager in 2011, “AVB” has now secured the league title in his second year as President. His decision to overhaul the sporting department is being hailed as the catalyst for this “Dragão Renaissance.”
  • Francesco Farioli: The 37-year-old Italian tactician has won the first major trophy of his coaching career in his debut season in Portugal. Farioli’s fluid, tactical approach—developed under the tutelage of Roberto De Zerbi—has revitalized a squad that saw major investment last summer.
  • Tactical Dominance: Under Farioli, Porto has registered 27 wins and only one defeat in 32 league matches, while boasting the best defensive record in the division (only 15 goals conceded).

Closing the Gap

With this 31st title, Porto continues to close the historical gap with Benfica (38 titles) and solidifies their status as the dominant force of the current decade. As the players celebrated amid fireworks and the iconic anthem “Porto, Porto, Porto,” the message was clear: the Dragon has woken up.
With Francesco Farioli already attracting interest from the Premier League, do you think Villas-Boas can keep the Italian at the Dragão for a Champions League charge next season, or will the “Farioli-ball” hype prove too hard to resist for Europe’s biggest spenders?
