The race for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez has taken a dramatic twist. Despite Arsenal agreeing to a stunning player-plus-cash package with Los Colchoneros, the 26-year-old Argentine forward has made it clear that FC Barcelona is his exclusive priority this summer.

The Standoff: Barcelona vs. Atlético Madrid
Álvarez’s camp has explicitly informed other European suitors—including Premier League champions Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain—that his heart is set on the Camp Nou. Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco view the forward as the ultimate long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski and are preparing a financial package worth €120 million to €130 million including add-ons.
However, extracting him from Madrid is proving to be a monumental challenge:
- The Financial Barrier: Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has publicly warned Barça that Álvarez will not be allowed to leave unless his €500 million release clause is triggered.
- Rivalry Tax: Atlético remains highly reluctant to strengthen a direct La Liga competitor and previously turned down a €150 million bid from Real Madrid earlier this year.
The Arsenal Twist
Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had capitalized on the situation, successfully locking in a closed agreement with Atlético. The proposed Gunners package was valued at roughly €115 million, structured as €50 million (£43m) in cash plus Swedish marksman Viktor Gyökeres moving the other way.
Despite Arsenal’s readiness to seal the transfer following their historic Premier League triumph, Álvarez’s insistence on moving to Catalonia has effectively stalled the North London move.
Barcelona Activates Contingency Plan
Recognizing the immense difficulty of negotiating with a stubborn Atlético board, Barcelona has already lined up backup targets. The club has placed Manchester United forward Benjamin Šeško on its shortlist should the Álvarez saga collapse entirely.
United, under manager Michael Carrick, has immediately shot back by labeling Šeško “untouchable,” setting the stage for a highly explosive, multi-club transfer window over the coming weeks.
