Manchester, UK – Manchester City have officially informed goalkeeper Stefan Ortega that he is free to leave the club this summer, following the re-signing of James Trafford from Burnley.
The arrival of the highly-rated English youngster has shifted the pecking order in Pep Guardiola’s goalkeeping department, making Ortega’s position as backup untenable.
Ortega, 32, joined City in 2022 on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld and has served as a reliable second-choice to Ederson.
While he has had memorable moments, including crucial saves that contributed to City’s Premier League title triumphs, his opportunities for regular first-team football would be significantly limited with Trafford now positioned as the clear backup and future heir to Ederson.
With just one year remaining on his contract until summer 2026, City are prepared to let the German goalkeeper move on.
This decision is reportedly mutual, as Ortega himself is keen to secure a number one spot elsewhere at this stage of his career, especially with an eye on his international prospects.
Interest in Ortega is already building across Europe. Reports indicate that at least three Premier League clubs are actively pursuing his services, while Turkish giants Fenerbahçe are also in serious talks to secure him as their first-choice goalkeeper.
Leicester City and Burnley (who just sold Trafford to City) have also been mentioned as potential destinations.
Ortega’s departure, after joining on a free, would represent a shrewd piece of business for Manchester City, allowing them to make a profit while providing a clear path for James Trafford to develop alongside Ederson.
All eyes will now be on where the experienced German goalkeeper will land next to find the regular playing time he desires.
