Manchester United have officially received a final €12.4 million (£10.5m) payment resulting from the sell-on clause included in Mason Greenwood’s contract. The payout comes as a direct consequence of the 24-year-old forward finalizing a permanent transfer from Olympique de Marseille to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe.

The transfer fee paid by Fenerbahçe to Marseille is a guaranteed €39 million (£33.2m).
Understanding the Financial Breakdown
The flow of cash from the deal is highly complex due to two distinct, historical agreements:
- The Marseille Sell-On: When Manchester United originally sanctioned Greenwood’s permanent transfer to Marseille in 2024 for £26.6 million, club executives negotiated a hefty 40% sell-on clause on any future profit or transfer fee. This clause initially yielded a gross cut of roughly €15.6 million (£13.3m) from the €39 million fee.
- The Getafe Kickback: As part of Greenwood’s loan spell at Getafe during the 2023/24 season, United agreed to a clause granting the Spanish club 20% of any sell-on fee United generated. Consequently, United must instantly hand over roughly €3.1 million (£2.7m) to Getafe, leaving Old Trafford with a net intake of €12.4 million.
Reinforcing Michael Carrick’s Transfer Budget
The net €12.4 million windfall provides an immediate boost to Manchester United’s summer budget. Manager Michael Carrick is currently overseeing a major squad overhaul ahead of a campaign that includes UEFA Champions League football.
The club has already spent a combined £85 million to secure midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. These fresh funds will be reallocated directly back into the transfer kitty as Carrick’s recruitment team continues to target defensive reinforcements.
