Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid and Benfica are reportedly “closing in” on an agreement for the transfer of highly-rated left-back Álvaro Carreras.
Negotiations are said to be “very advanced,” with the 22-year-old Spanish defender having expressed his clear desire to join only Real Madrid, with personal terms already sealed since June.
The deal is expected to be formally closed after the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup, where Benfica participated.
This timeline was reportedly a factor in the protracted nature of the negotiations, as Benfica were reluctant to part with Carreras during the tournament.
Real Madrid has identified Carreras as a key target to strengthen their left-back position.
While Benfica has reportedly been holding firm on his €50 million release clause, Real Madrid has been attempting to negotiate a lower fee, with earlier reports suggesting they were keen on a deal around €40 million.
Recent reports indicate that the presidents of both clubs, Florentino Pérez and Rui Costa, are now directly involved in the talks, increasing the hope for a swift resolution.
Carreras, who had a successful loan spell at Benfica before making his move permanent from Manchester United in July 2024 for €6 million, has a contract with the Portuguese club until June 2029.
Manchester United also reportedly retains a 20% sell-on clause, which would provide them with a significant windfall from this transfer.
With personal terms agreed and the player eager to make the switch to the Santiago Bernabéu, the focus is now on the final financial details between the two clubs.
The deal is said to be “almost there,” with all parties optimistic about reaching a final agreement soon.
