Not a Done Deal: Andrés Iniesta and Morocco Still in Negotiations

Despite a wave of reports circulating on social media today suggesting that Andrés Iniesta has officially signed on as the new Technical Director for the Moroccan National Team, sources close to the player insist that nothing is “signed or sealed” just yet.

Not a Done Deal: Andrés Iniesta and Morocco Still in Negotiations

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has made no secret of their desire to bring the Barcelona legend into their hierarchy.

Following the sudden departure of Walid Regragui and the appointment of Mohamed Ouahbi as head coach, the federation is looking for a high-profile “architect” to oversee their long-term sporting project.

The Current Status: Negotiations Underway
While some outlets have prematurely announced the deal, the reality is more nuanced:

  • The Proposal: Morocco has offered Iniesta a wide-ranging role that would involve structuring the professional pathways between the youth academies and the senior squad, specifically with an eye toward the 2030 World Cup (which Morocco will co-host).
  • The “Ouahbi” Connection: Iniesta is reportedly intrigued by the prospect of working alongside Mohamed Ouahbi, whose U-20 World Cup success has laid a strong foundation for the Atlas Lions’ future.
  • The Decision: The ball is firmly in Iniesta’s court. The 41-year-old, who has been exploring various coaching and directorial pathways since his retirement in 2024, is taking his time to evaluate the personal and professional commitment required for such a high-stakes role in North Africa.

Why Morocco is Pushing

For FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa, landing Iniesta would be a monumental “statement of intent.” By pairing the tactical methodology of João

Sacramento (who has joined the coaching staff) with the footballing intelligence of Iniesta, Morocco aims to create a hybrid European-African style that can dominate on the world stage.

What to Expect Tonight

A press conference is still scheduled for tonight at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. While the primary focus will be the official introduction of Mohamed Ouahbi as the new head coach for the 2026 World Cup, many are waiting to see if Iniesta’s appointment will be the “surprise” finale.

However, until the man himself puts pen to paper, the “Don Andrés” era in Morocco remains a tantalizing possibility rather than a confirmed reality.
