ABUJA, NIGERIA – Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing an emotional close to a decade of service to the Nigerian national team.

The defender’s decision, which was immediately communicated to his teammates, comes in the wake of Nigeria’s devastating failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

World Cup Disappointment The Final Factor

The 32-year-old reportedly informed his teammates of his decision in the dressing room following the team’s narrow play-off defeat to DR Congo, which crushed Nigeria’s hopes of making the 2026 World Cup. Sources suggest the decision was heavily influenced by the emotional toll of the qualifying campaign and a desire to focus on his club career at Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia.

Troost-Ekong’s departure creates a significant leadership and defensive vacuum. While he will no longer be an active player, the centre-back has confirmed he still intends to travel with the squad to Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in a supportive, non-playing capacity, demonstrating his continued commitment to the team’s success.

A Legacy Forged in Green and White

Ekong’s career with the Super Eagles began in 2015 and saw him become a foundational figure in Nigeria’s defence, forming the formidable partnership famously dubbed “The Oyibo Wall” alongside Leon Balogun.

His international peak came at the delayed 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he captained the team to the final and was deservedly named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

With Ekong stepping aside, the captaincy is expected to pass to midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, while the focus shifts to young defenders like Benjamin Fredrick to step up and anchor the defence.
