Niclas Füllkrug’s time at West Ham United is drawing to a close. After a challenging spell following his summer move, reports are swirling that the German international is actively seeking an exit in the January transfer window, with his “chapter” at the London Stadium definitively over.

Niclas Füllkrug's West Ham Chapter Closes: Bundesliga Return Beckons, Serie A Looms?

For Hammers fans, this news might not come as a shock. Füllkrug, who arrived with a formidable reputation from the Bundesliga, has struggled to find his footing, battling injuries and inconsistent form.

A goal tally that falls short of expectations means his tenure will likely be remembered as a missed opportunity for both player and club.

The World Cup Call: A Driving Force

Füllkrug’s primary motivation for seeking a move is clear: the upcoming FIFA World Cup. To cement his place in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad, the prolific striker desperately needs regular first-team football – something that looks increasingly unlikely under West Ham’s new management. A return to familiar surroundings, where he can regain his scoring touch and confidence, is paramount.

Bundesliga Calling: A Likely Homecoming

Unsurprisingly, the Bundesliga appears to be Füllkrug’s most probable destination. German clubs are reportedly already engaged in talks, with the prospect of bringing a proven national team striker back to his home league proving highly attractive.

VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV are among the frontrunners, with both clubs potentially offering the consistent game time Füllkrug craves.

A move back to Germany would allow him to quickly reintegrate, re-establish his rhythm, and put himself firmly in the frame for the national team.

The Italian Job: Serie A’s Intriguing Interest

However, it’s not just German clubs vying for his signature. Interest is also emanating from Italy, with Serie A giants AC Milan and AS Roma reportedly entering the conversation.

A move to one of Italy’s top clubs could offer a fresh challenge in a different tactical environment, potentially rejuvenating his career while still providing a high-profile platform for World Cup contention.

West Ham’s Stance: A Deal to Be Done?

West Ham, for their part, seem amenable to Füllkrug’s departure. With a new managerial era underway, a clear-out of players not central to future plans is expected.

The Hammers will, however, be keen to recoup a significant portion of the reported €27 million they invested. This financial consideration will likely be a key factor in negotiations, potentially making outright sales more appealing than loan deals for the London club.

As January approaches, all eyes will be on Niclas Füllkrug’s next move. Will he return to the familiar embrace of the Bundesliga, or will an enticing offer from Serie A lure him to Italy? One thing is certain: a new chapter is about to begin for the German striker.
