Newcastle United have officially completed the paperwork for the signing of South American wonderkid Johán Martínez from Independiente del Valle.

Newcastle United Secure "Next Moises Caicedo" as Johan Martínez Deal Hits "Here We Go"

As of Tuesday, April 7, 2026, all documents have been counter-signed, and Fabrizio Romano has signaled the “here we go” for the highly-rated 16-year-old.

The deal follows Newcastle’s strategic push into the South American market, aiming to replicate the success seen by clubs like Brighton and Chelsea with Independiente del Valle’s elite academy—the same system that produced Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapié, and Willian Pacho.

The Details of the Deal

  • The Player: Martínez is a versatile 16-year-old winger and attacking midfielder, widely considered the “jewel” of the Ecuadorian youth system.
  • The Arrival: Due to post-Brexit transfer regulations regarding overseas minors, Martínez will not physically arrive at St James’ Park until he turns 18 in 2028.
  • The Competition: Newcastle reportedly beat out interest from Arsenal and Chelsea to secure the teenager, who had been a “priority target” for the club’s scouting department for several months.

Building a Future on Tyneside

This signing is part of a broader recruitment drive under sporting director Ross Wilson to secure elite youth talent before they reach “astronomical” market values.

Martínez joins a growing list of future-focused signings at the club, including Georgian starlet Vakhtang Salia, who is also awaiting his 18th birthday to join the Magpies.

Squad Context: The Sandro Tonali Factor

While the club secures its future, the current first-team midfield remains in flux. Reports today suggest Arsenal and Manchester United are intensifying their efforts to sign Sandro Tonali this June.

If Tonali departs, Newcastle are reportedly looking at Elliot Anderson (potentially returning or similar profiles) and other midfield reinforcements to bridge the gap until Martínez and the next generation are ready for the Premier League.

For now, the Martínez deal is locked in, marking a significant victory for Newcastle’s global scouting network.
