Newcastle upon Tyne, UK – Negotiations are currently underway between Newcastle United and Burnley for the transfer of goalkeeper James Trafford.

Newcastle and Burnley in Talks for James Trafford Transfer

Club-to-club talks are ongoing, with an acceleration of the deal expected from next week as the July transfer window officially opens.

Newcastle United has a long-standing interest in Trafford, with reports indicating they were close to signing him last summer before a deal fell through.

However, the Magpies have reignited their pursuit of the 22-year-old, who has impressed with his performances for Burnley, particularly in the recently concluded season where he played a starring role in their immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

He kept a remarkable 29 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals in the Championship.

Burnley is reportedly valuing Trafford at around £30 million, though some sources suggest a figure closer to £40 million. This valuation comes after his initial £19 million move from Manchester City two years ago.

Manchester City also holds a buy-back clause for Trafford, reportedly over £40 million, though sources suggest they are unlikely to activate it and will not stand in the way of his move to Newcastle.

Newcastle’s interest in Trafford stems from their desire to add competition for current number one Nick Pope. While Pope is expected to stay at St. James’ Park, Trafford is viewed as a significant long-term investment who could challenge for the starting spot immediately.

Burnley, meanwhile, appears to be preparing for Trafford’s potential departure, having reportedly agreed a £4.2 million deal for Karlsruher SC goalkeeper Max Weiss as a long-term replacement.

As the summer transfer window approaches its official opening in July, talks between Newcastle and Burnley are anticipated to intensify, with a resolution to Trafford’s future potentially coming in the very near future.
