MANCHESTER — Michael Carrick has emerged as the frontrunner to become Manchester United’s new interim manager after a series of “positive and impressive” face-to-face meetings with the INEOS-led hierarchy.
While Ole Gunnar Solskjær remains a significant candidate and is reportedly waiting for a final decision, momentum has shifted toward Carrick following his interview with CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox on Thursday.
The Current Situation
United are looking to appoint a temporary successor to Rúben Amorim to lead the team until the end of the 2025-26 season. After a week of internal deliberation and interviews at Carrington, the club is expected to make an official announcement before Wednesday.
- Michael Carrick: Sources indicate that Carrick’s tactical presentation and his experience managing Middlesbrough (before his departure in 2025) have made him the preferred choice. He is said to be “hopeful and ready” to return to Old Trafford.
- Ole Gunnar Solskjær: Despite being the initial “fan favorite” for a return, the Norwegian is now viewed as the secondary option. Carrick’s brief but successful 2021 caretaker stint (where he went unbeaten) and his subsequent work in the Championship have given the board confidence in his ability to implement a distinct style of play immediately.
“The club is looking for stability, but also a glimpse of the tactical direction they want for the future,” a source told Sky Sports. “Carrick fits the profile of a coach who can bridge that gap.”
