Manchester City has officially joined the scramble for Germany’s latest teenage prodigy, Kennet Eichhorn.

As of Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the 16-year-old Hertha BSC midfielder has become the focal point of a major transfer tug-of-law between Premier League giants and Bundesliga royalty.

Man City Enters Race for Hertha Sensation Kennet Eichhorn; Battle with Arsenal and Leverkusen Heating Up

Reports from Fabrizio Romano and German outlets indicate that City’s scouting department has been “highly impressed” by Eichhorn’s breakout season in the 2. Bundesliga, viewing him as a generational talent in the defensive midfield role.

The “Shooting Star” of Berlin

Despite his age, Eichhorn has already become a fixture in Hertha’s senior setup this season. His technical profile—standing 186cm (6’1″) with elite ball retention—has earned him comparisons to a young Toni Kroos or even Rodri.

  • 2025–26 Campaign: 13 senior appearances and 1 goal (in the DFB-Pokal).
  • International Pedigree: A key captain for Germany’s U17 side, recently leading them through the Euro 2026 qualifiers.
  • Market Value: Currently estimated around €21 million, though his contract reportedly contains a release clause closer to €12 million, making him an absolute bargain for elite clubs.

The Competition: A Three-Way Fight

While Manchester City has just formalised their interest, they are far from alone in the race:

  • Arsenal: The Gunners have been tracking Eichhorn since late 2025. Mikel Arteta is reportedly pushing for the deal, viewing the German as the ideal long-term anchor for Arsenal’s midfield.
  • Bayer Leverkusen: Xabi Alonso’s side is currently considered the “pole position” favorite. Reports from Sky Germany last week suggested Leverkusen had already “stolen a march” on their rivals, hoping to keep the player in the Bundesliga.
  • Bayern Munich: The Bavarian giants are monitoring the situation closely, though they have yet to submit a formal proposal as they wait for their new sporting direction to be finalized.

Man City’s Strategic Play

For City, the pursuit of Eichhorn fits into a broader summer strategy. With Bernardo Silva confirmed to be leaving as a free agent and uncertainty surrounding Rodri’s long-term contract extension, Pep Guardiola is prioritizing “high-ceiling” technical midfielders.

If City wins the race, they are expected to employ a similar strategy to their recent South American signings: securing the player now to join the first-team squad immediately for the 2026–27 pre-season.

What’s Next?

Eichhorn is expected to make a final decision on his future by the end of May. With Hertha BSC currently fighting for promotion back to the Bundesliga, the player is “fully focused” on the final five matches of the season before picking his next destination.
