Liverpool, UK – In a profound gesture of compassion and support, Liverpool Football Club will pay the remaining two years of Diogo Jota’s contract to his family, following the tragic death of the Portuguese forward and his brother.

Liverpool to Honor Diogo Jota's Contract, Will Pay Remaining Two Years to Family

This moving decision was reported by Record Portugal and widely confirmed by other media outlets.

Jota, who tragically passed away on Thursday, July 3, in a car accident in Spain, had two years remaining on the lucrative contract he signed with Liverpool in August 2022.

This agreement was reportedly worth around £140,000 per week, extending until June 2027.

The sum, estimated to be approximately £14.5 million, will serve as financial support for Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children during this unimaginably difficult period.

The club’s ownership, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), made this swift and heartfelt decision, which has been widely praised by football stakeholders and fans globally as a powerful act of humanity and a testament to Liverpool’s values.

It underscores the club’s deep commitment to its players and their families, extending beyond their on-field contributions.

This announcement comes as the football world continues to mourn the untimely loss of Jota, a beloved figure at Anfield who made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.

His funeral service took place on Saturday in Gondomar, Portugal, attended by many of his Liverpool teammates, club staff, and former coaches, alongside thousands of grieving fans.

Liverpool has also opened a book of condolence at Anfield and online, with discussions underway for a permanent memorial at the stadium to honor Jota’s legacy.

The decision to pay out his contract ensures financial stability for his grieving family and serves as a lasting tribute to the impact he had both on and off the pitch.
