Liverpool have entered the final stages of the January window by opening club-to-club negotiations for Lutsharel Geertruida.
The 25-year-old Dutch international is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, making this a complex three-way negotiation.
Arne Slot is driving the pursuit, having transformed Geertruida into a tactical centerpiece during their title-winning era at Feyenoord.
The Defensive Crisis
The move has been triggered by a “perfect storm” of injuries at Anfield:

The Negotiation Hurdles
- The Sunderland Factor: The Black Cats paid a £2 million loan fee in the summer and have a £21 million buy option. To get the deal done, Liverpool must convince Sunderland to terminate the loan early, which likely requires Sunderland to find a replacement before Monday’s deadline.
- The Leipzig Factor: As the parent club, RB Leipzig must sanction the sub-loan or a permanent sale. Reports suggest a package deal or a “loan with obligation” is being discussed to satisfy all parties.
- The Player’s Stance: Geertruida has already spoken glowingly about Slot, stating the manager “brought out the best in him” at Feyenoord. He is reportedly keen on the move to secure a Champions League spot and boost his standing for the 2026 World Cup.
