In a moment that defined the word “leadership,” Lionel Messi once again showed why his teammates view him as more than just a captain.

Lionel Messi’s Ultimate Act of Captaincy: Handing Penalty to Retiring Nicolás Otamendi in Final Home Game

During Argentina’s 5-0 victory over Zambia at La Bombonera on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Messi set aside his own pursuit of records to honor a lifelong friend and teammate.

When Argentina was awarded a penalty in the second half, the stadium expected Messi to step up—especially as he was chasing his 901st career goal.

Instead, he immediately called over Nicolás Otamendi, handing him the ball in what was an unmistakable gesture of respect.

A Final Bow at La Bombonera

The reason for the gesture was deeply personal. Earlier this week, the 38-year-old Otamendi confirmed that he will retire from international football following the 2026 World Cup this summer.

With this match against Zambia being Argentina’s final fixture on home soil before the tournament, it marked Otamendi’s last ever game in front of his home fans.

  • The Goal: Otamendi made no mistake from the spot, coolly converting the penalty in the 50th minute to make it 3-0.
  • The Celebration: After scoring, Otamendi was visibly emotional, embraced by Messi and the entire squad in front of a standing ovation from the Argentine faithful.

The Stats from a Historic Night

The 5-0 rout was a perfect send-off for the world champions as they prepare to defend their title in North America:

  • Lionel Messi: 1 goal (his 116th for Argentina) and 1 assist (to Julián Álvarez).
  • Nicolás Otamendi: 1 goal (penalty).
  • Other Scorers: Julián Álvarez (4′), Dominic Chanda (68′ OG), and Valentín Barco (90+4′).

“No Greater Satisfaction”

Speaking after the match, an emotional Otamendi expressed his gratitude:

“There is no greater satisfaction than wearing the national team jersey. I am very happy to have had this send-off at home. To have Leo give me that penalty… it’s a memory I will take with me forever.”

With Otamendi and Messi now the last remaining links to the 2010 and 2014 World Cup eras, the night felt like the closing of a legendary chapter in Argentine football history.

Argentina will now turn their focus to their World Cup opener against Algeria on June 16.
