Ivory Coast marked their highly anticipated return to the global stage after a 12-year absence with a stunning 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their World Cup Group E opener. In a high-octane affair at Philadelphia Stadium, Manchester United winger Amad Diallo emerged as the ultimate super-sub, netting a dramatic 90th-minute winner to snap Ecuador’s remarkable 19-match unbeaten streak.

A Frantic Woodwork Masterclass

Despite a stadium packed with a sea of yellow-clad Ecuadorian fans, the African champions went toe-to-toe with La Tri in an intensely physical match. The first half was defined by near-misses and the echoing rattle of metal:

  • 24th Minute: Ecuador’s John Yeboah cut inside and launched a wicked, curling effort that violently shook the crossbar.
  • 30th Minute: Just minutes later, Alan Minda breached the Ivorian backline only for his clean shot to smash against the woodwork yet again.
  • 52nd Minute: The curse struck the opposite side after halftime when Ivory Coast’s Elye Wahi met a sharp Yan Diomande cross, only to see his brilliant effort loop onto the crossbar.

The Decisive Twist

As both tactical defensive setups threatened to lock out the game for a 0-0 stalemate, Ivory Coast boss Emerse Fae tinkered with his frontline. Bringing on Amad Diallo in the 56th minute dramatically altered the tempo.

The breakthrough finally materialised at the absolute death of normal time. Defender Wilfried Singo put together a lung-busting run down the right flank, driving into the penalty box before cutting a low, perfectly weighted cross backward. Diallo positioned himself perfectly, guiding a cool, first-time left-footed finish right past the diving Hernán Galíndez.

The monumental win puts the Ivory Coast level with Germany at the top of Group E with 3 points, while Sebastian Beccacece’s Ecuador will look to salvage their campaign on June 20 against Curaçao.
