BERLIN, Germany – Decorated German defender Jerome Boateng has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a stellar career that saw him win a World Cup and numerous titles with Bayern Munich.

Jerome Boateng Retires from Professional Football

The 37-year-old, who was a key figure for club and country for over a decade, confirmed the decision on social media, stating that he is “ready to move on.”

In a video message to fans, Boateng expressed his gratitude for his time in the sport. “I played for a long time, for big clubs, for my country. I learned, won, lost, and grown through it all,” he said.

“Football has given me a lot, but now it’s time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I’m ready. I’m grateful for everything, for the teams, the fans, the people who carried me. And above all, my family, my children. They were always there.”

The decision to retire comes after a period of uncertainty for the defender.

He had recently had his contract with Austrian club LASK terminated by mutual consent. While his latter years were also marred by off-field legal issues, his legacy on the pitch remains significant.

Boateng’s career highlights include winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany, where he was a crucial starter in the final.

At the club level, he enjoyed his most successful period at Bayern Munich, where he won nine Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and multiple other domestic and international honors.

His career also included spells at Hertha Berlin, Hamburger SV, Manchester City, Olympique Lyonnais, and Salernitana.

With his playing career now officially over, Boateng is expected to begin a new chapter, though his future plans have not yet been announced.
