FC Barcelona have officially confirmed a significant defensive setback following their dramatic Copa del Rey clash against Atlético Madrid.

Injury Crisis Hits Catalonia: Barcelona Confirm Sidelining of Alejandro Balde

Left-back Alejandro Balde has been diagnosed with a distal hamstring (biceps femoris) injury in his left thigh, an issue that will keep him out of action for at least the next month.

The injury occurred during Tuesday night’s 3-0 victory at the Spotify Camp Nou—a spirited performance that ultimately wasn’t enough to overturn a 4-0 first-leg deficit.

In a cruel twist of irony, Balde had actually entered the match as a substitute for Jules Koundé, who also pulled up with a hamstring injury just ten minutes into the game.

By the 68th minute, Balde was forced to signal to the bench in tears, unable to complete the match.

Official Medical Statement

The club released the following update on Wednesday, March 4, 2026:

“Alejandro Balde presents an injury to the distal biceps femoris of the left thigh. Tests determine that the recovery process will take approximately 4 weeks.”

A Massive Void in the defense

The timing of this injury could not be worse for manager Hansi Flick. With both first-choice full-backs, Balde and Koundé, sidelined simultaneously, Barcelona faces a grueling March schedule with a heavily depleted backline.

Balde is set to miss several high-stakes fixtures:

  • Champions League: Both legs of the Round of 16 tie against Newcastle United.
  • La Liga: Crucial matches against Athletic Club, Sevilla, and Rayo Vallecano.
  • International Break: He will also be unavailable for Spain’s upcoming fixtures.

Flick’s Frustration

Hansi Flick did not hide his concern in the post-match press conference, noting that it is “not normal” to lose three key players to muscle injuries in a single week (referencing Balde, Koundé, and Frenkie de Jong).

The spotlight now shifts to Gerard Martín and the versatile João Cancelo, who will be expected to cover the flanks during this critical juncture.

The medical staff’s goal is to have Balde back and match-fit for the league clash against Atlético Madrid in early April.
