It is officially the end of the road for Tyrell Malacia at Old Trafford. Following Manchester United’s final home game of the season—a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest—the club and manager Michael Carrick confirmed that the 26-year-old left-back will depart as a free agent when his contract expires in June.

Malacia, who was Erik ten Hag’s very first signing back in July 2022, was presented with a signed commemorative shirt in front of the Stretford End during the post-match lap of appreciation, signaling a clean break for both parties.
An Injury-Plagued Old Trafford Career
Malacia’s departure marks a bittersweet conclusion to a United career that was fundamentally derailed by a devastating knee injury.
- The Promising Start: In his debut 2022/23 campaign, Malacia looked like a shrewd addition, racking up 49 appearances, pushing Luke Shaw for the starting berth, and helping the club lift the Carabao Cup.
- The 500-Day Nightmare: A severe knee injury sustained on the final day of his debut season sidelined him for a staggering 18 months, causing him to miss the entire 2023/24 campaign.
- The Stalling Road Back: After a brief loan spell at PSV Eindhoven last year to rebuild fitness, Malacia returned to Carrington for the 2025/26 season but completely struggled to break into Carrick’s plans. He managed just two senior appearances this term, totaling a mere seven minutes of football.
Carrick’s Farewell and the INEOS Trim
Addressing the Old Trafford crowd on Sunday, Michael Carrick made sure to show his appreciation for the defender’s professionalism during an incredibly difficult mental and physical period:
“There’s Tyrell, who I spoke to the boys about before kick-off. He’s been through a tough time due to injuries. I encourage you to show him your support.”
Malacia’s exit is part of a massive, ruthless squad clearing under the INEOS regime. With Casemiro also set to depart on a free and Rasmus Højlund’s permanent £38m move to Napoli officially locked in following their Champions League qualification, United are successfully slashing a massive chunk off their weekly wage bill.
With Malacia leaving for free and Luke Shaw’s historical injury record, left-back is suddenly a gaping hole in United’s roster. Do you think Carrick should look for a marquee signing to completely own that position next season, or trust youth development given how well the academy products have stepped up this year?
