Marseille, France – Olympique Marseille have reached a “here we go” agreement with RC Lens for the transfer of Argentine defender Facundo Medina.
The deal for the 26-year-old is agreed for a package worth in excess of €20 million, with L’Équipe reporting the total potential fee for Lens could reach €22 million.
Medina is set to sign a five-year deal with Olympique Marseille, committing his future to the Stade Vélodrome until June 2030.
This move marks a significant defensive reinforcement for Marseille under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who reportedly pushed hard for the signing despite some internal hesitations regarding Medina’s height for a central defender.
Medina, a left-footed center-back known for his tenacity, ball-playing ability, and versatility, has been a key figure for Lens since joining them in 2020.
He had recently renewed his contract with Lens until 2028, but his desire for a move to Marseille, coupled with Lens’s willingness to sell for the right price, has facilitated the transfer.
The negotiations between the two clubs have been closely watched, especially given the history of tense dealings, such as the drawn-out transfer of Jonathan Clauss in 2022. However, it appears all parties have now found common ground.
For Marseille, the acquisition of Medina is a strong statement of intent as they aim to build a squad capable of challenging at the top of Ligue 1 and in European competitions.
For Lens, the sale represents a substantial financial return on a player they signed for a much lower fee, allowing them to reinvest in their squad.
Facundo Medina is now expected to finalize the administrative details and join his new teammates as Marseille begins its pre-season preparations.
