In a significant blow to Chelsea’s European ambitions, teenage sensation Estêvão Willian has been officially ruled out of Wednesday’s Champions League Round of 16 first-leg tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

The club confirmed the Brazilian winger’s absence as the 23-man squad touched down in the French capital today, March 10, 2026, without their most exciting summer arrival.

The 18-year-old, who has taken the Premier League by storm since his arrival from Palmeiras, is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during training in late February.

While initial reports suggested he might return in time for the trip to the Parc des Princes, manager Liam Rosenior opted for absolute caution during his pre-match press conference in Paris.

“Safety First” Policy

Estêvão has missed Chelsea’s last four fixtures, including the 4-1 win over Aston Villa and the recent FA Cup victory over Wrexham.

While he has returned to light work on the grass at Cobham, the medical staff determined that the intensity of a knockout match against the reigning European champions was too high a risk for his recovery.

“Estêvão is back on the pitch running, but he hasn’t cleared all the markers yet,” Rosenior explained. “With a hamstring injury for a player of his explosiveness, we cannot afford a relapse. It’s frustrating for him because he wants to play every minute, but we have to look at the bigger picture.”

The “Garnacho-Neto” Solution

With Estêvão unavailable and Jamie Gittens also left in London to continue his rehabilitation, the attacking burden shifts to Chelsea’s other young stars. Alejandro Garnacho, fresh off his heroics in the FA Cup, is expected to start on the wing, likely paired with the fit-again Pedro Neto.

The Blues did receive a minor boost as Levi Colwill was spotted in training this week, though he was also excluded from the traveling squad as he builds fitness following a long-term knee injury.

A Remarkable Debut Season

Despite this injury setback, Estêvão’s impact in London has been historic. Having already secured the London Football Awards’ Young Player of the Year 2026 last week, he currently boasts 3 Champions League goals this season.

Fans will now be hoping his “conservative treatment” allows him to return for the second leg at Stamford Bridge on March 17, where Chelsea will look to replicate the spirit of their 3-0 Club World Cup final victory over PSG from last summer.
