The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially exploded into life at a rocking, high-altitude Estadio Azteca. In a high-stakes rematch of their iconic 2010 opening encounter, co-hosts Mexico handled the immense home pressure beautifully, securing a vital 2–0 victory over a resilient South Africa to lay down an immediate marker in Group A.

It took just nine minutes for the tournament’s expanded, 48-team era to produce its first signature moment. Exploiting a defensive lapse from Bafana Bafana, midfielder Erik Lira cut off an unstable clearance and fed Julián Quiñones, who calmly slotted a low strike through the legs of Ronwen Williams.
The early breakthrough alleviated any lingering opening-night nerves for Javier Aguirre’s side, turning the stands into a sea of green pandemonium.
The second half transformed from a tactical chess match into complete, physical chaos. South Africa’s hopes took a massive hit when Yaya Sithole received a direct red card in the 49th minute for hauling down Raúl Jiménez.
Mexico quickly capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Jiménez powering home a spectacular back-post header from a Roberto Alvarado cross in the 67th minute to seal the three points.
However, the game finished in a wild sea of cards. South Africa’s Themba Zwane was sent off for violent conduct, followed quickly by Mexico’s César Montes picking up a straight red in stoppage time. Despite the late disciplinary drama and an impending suspension for Montes, El Tri successfully secured a clean sheet to jump to the top of Group A.
With Julian Quiñones firing on all cylinders and Mexico maximizing their home-field advantage, do you think El Tri have what it takes to easily top Group A, or will the disciplinary issues and Montes’ upcoming suspension expose them in the next round?
