LONDON – Chelsea Football Club has been hit with 74 charges from the Football Association (FA) for alleged breaches of agent regulations, with the majority of the offenses occurring during the tenure of former owner Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea Charged with 74 Breaches of FA Agent Regulations

The charges, which span from 2009 to 2022, primarily relate to a period between the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons.

The FA’s investigation was triggered after Chelsea’s new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, self-reported “potentially incomplete financial reporting” discovered during their due diligence process when purchasing the club in 2022.

The charges concern rules governing the use of agents, intermediaries, and third-party involvement in player transfers.

While the FA has not disclosed the specific details of each charge, they relate to regulations such as the use of unauthorized agents, working with unregistered intermediaries, and failing to properly disclose payments to agents and other parties.

Chelsea has until September 19 to provide a response to the charges. The club has already stated that it has cooperated fully with the FA and provided comprehensive access to its historical data.

The potential sanctions for such breaches can be severe and may include fines, a transfer ban, or a points deduction. However, the club’s decision to self-report the issues could be a mitigating factor in any final ruling.
