GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – Brendan Rodgers has sensationally resigned as manager of Celtic Football Club with immediate effect, the club confirmed in a late evening statement.

BREAKING: Brendan Rodgers Quits Celtic with Immediate Effect Amidst Growing Turmoil 💔

The abrupt departure of the highly successful manager sends shockwaves through Scottish football, marking a dramatic end to his second tenure at Parkhead.

The decision comes less than 24 hours after a damaging 3-1 defeat to league leaders Heart of Midlothian, a result that leaves the reigning champions a significant eight points adrift in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Speculation regarding Rodgers’ discontent over the club’s transfer policy in recent months is widely cited as the catalyst for the manager deciding to walk away from his contract.

The official club statement confirmed that the Northern Irishman had tendered his resignation, which was accepted by the board, allowing him to leave his post immediately.

While acknowledging his considerable achievements—which included delivering a period of sustained success and multiple domestic trophies across his two spells—the departure appears far from amicable.

Adding an extraordinary layer of drama, principal Celtic shareholder Dermot Desmond released a follow-up statement that directly criticized the departing manager, labeling his recent conduct and communication as “divisive, misleading, and self-serving.”

Desmond’s unusually public rebuke points to a complete breakdown in the relationship between Rodgers and the club’s hierarchy.

In an immediate attempt to stabilize the dressing room and first-team affairs, Celtic has moved swiftly to appoint a beloved former manager, Martin O’Neill, on an interim basis. O’Neill, who led the club to great success in the early 2000s, will be assisted by former Celtic player Shaun Maloney.

The new interim duo faces an intense baptism of fire, with a crucial league match against Falkirk on Wednesday quickly followed by a highly anticipated League Cup semi-final derby against rivals Rangers at Hampden Park on Sunday.

The swift appointments underscore the urgency felt by the club to navigate a vital week of fixtures without a permanent figure in charge.

The search for a long-term successor to Rodgers is now officially underway, with the club promising to update supporters as the process unfolds.

The atmosphere around Parkhead had grown increasingly toxic in recent weeks, with supporter frustration targeted at both the board and, increasingly, the manager following a calamitous Champions League exit and the club’s poor domestic form.

Rodgers’ exit, while sudden, brings to a head months of underlying friction and public disagreements.

The focus will now shift to which manager can restore unity and mount a credible charge to prevent Hearts from running away with the Scottish Premiership title.
