In a devastating blow to Borussia Dortmund’s campaign, the club has officially confirmed that captain Emre Can has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.

Borussia Dortmund Captain Emre Can Sidelined with ACL Injury

The injury, sustained during Saturday’s high-stakes Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich, effectively ends the 32-year-old’s season and leaves a leadership vacuum at the heart of the BVB squad.

The Incident at Signal Iduna Park

The injury occurred in the 38th minute of the match following a heavy collision with Bayern’s Konrad Laimer.

In a display of the grit that earned him the captain’s armband, Can initially attempted to play through the pain. However, after several minutes of visible discomfort, he was forced to signal to the bench and was replaced by Ramy Bensebaini just before the halftime whistle.

Following the match—a 3-2 defeat that saw Bayern pull 11 points clear in the title race—scans confirmed the club’s worst fears.

“Extremely Bitter”: The Club’s Reaction

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl expressed the collective heartbreak of the organization in an official statement:

“Emre’s injury is extremely bitter. Not just for him, but for all of us. He is our captain, always puts the team first, and is an important part of our club. Emre will receive all our support in the coming months so that he can make a full recovery.”

Wider Implications

The timing could not be worse for the veteran midfielder. Beyond the domestic struggle, this injury likely ends Can’s hopes of representing Germany in the upcoming World Cup.

With his contract currently set to expire this summer, questions are already surfacing about whether the captain has played his final minute for the Black and Yellows.

For coach Niko Kovač, the challenge now lies in restructuring a midfield that has relied heavily on Can’s physicality and defensive discipline. With several months of rehabilitation ahead, the Dortmund faithful can only hope for a swift and complete recovery for their leader.
