LONDON — Arsenal have confirmed a major injury setback for captain Martin Ødegaard, who has been diagnosed with a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury to his left knee following a collision during Saturday’s 2-0 win over West Ham United.

Blow for Arsenal as Captain Martin Ødegaard Suffers MCL Injury

The Norwegian midfielder has been withdrawn from the national squad and will remain in London for treatment during the international break.

Arsenal Statement Confirms Diagnosis
In a statement released on Sunday, the club provided an official update:

“Martin Ødegaard has been withdrawn from the Norway national team for their upcoming matches against Israel and New Zealand after sustaining a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee during the first half in Saturday’s win over West Ham United.”

“Martin will continue to be assessed and treated by our medical team at Sobha Realty Training Centre during the international window, with the aim of a return to action as soon as possible.”
Recovery Timeline Uncertain

While Arsenal did not provide a specific timeframe for his return, the news is a significant blow for manager Mikel Arteta, who has already seen his captain struggle with a shoulder issue this season.

  • Manager’s Concern: Arteta expressed concern after the match, noting that Ødegaard had left the stadium with his knee in a brace and was “not positive about it.”
  • MCL Prognosis: Recovery for an MCL injury varies widely based on the grade of the tear:
  • Grade 1 (Mild): Typically 1–3 weeks.
  • Grade 2 (Moderate): Typically 3–6 weeks.
  • Grade 3 (Severe): Can range from 6 weeks to over 10.

Arsenal and Norway will be hoping the break provides enough time for the creative midfielder to recover, with the Gunners’ next fixture—away to Fulham—scheduled immediately after the international window concludes.
