The first major piece of Manchester United’s summer engine-room rebuild is completely locked into place on the player’s side.
Brazilian midfielder Éderson has officially reached a full verbal agreement on personal terms over a five-year contract with United, completely pausing all negotiations with other interested clubs since last week to prioritize a move to Old Trafford.

United and Atalanta have spent weeks locked in advanced negotiations, structuring a total package worth €45 million (around £38.8m), which is expected to be broken down into a £35 million guaranteed payment plus £3.8 million in add-ons.
The Decision Rest with INEOS
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the operational framework of the deal is entirely complete, leaving the final decision exclusively in the hands of Manchester United’s hierarchy and manager Michael Carrick.
“There are two reasons [for the pause],”
Romano explained. “The first is Man Utd have to decide internally whether they want to proceed, to go and close the deal for Éderson, or whether they decide to go for different midfielders.
The Éderson deal is advanced with the player, for sure. They’re in conversations with Atalanta, for sure… but at the moment it’s Man Utd who have to decide whether to proceed and close the deal or not. That’s why there’s no final green light yet. Éderson is waiting for Man Utd.”
The strategic hesitation stems from United actively juggling multiple high-profile midfield targets, with a delegation recently traveling to Italy to map out exits and entries. While Éderson is viewed as an ideal, high-intensity replacement for the departing Casemiro, the club is concurrently working on a massive push for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and remains heavily linked with Nottingham Forest talisman Elliot Anderson.
Atletico’s Pivot Handed United a Free Run
United’s clear path to the 26-year-old was heavily accelerated by a sudden shift in the European market. Éderson had initially looked destined for a move to La Liga with Atletico Madrid. However, Diego Simeone’s side abruptly pivoted their financial resources toward Wolves’ João Gomes, allowing INEOS to aggressively step in and secure a free run at the Atalanta star.
Having registered 59 tackles and 28 interceptions in Serie A this season to help steer Gian Piero Gasperini’s side through a demanding domestic calendar, Éderson has given total priority to the Red Devils. The structural blueprint is ready—leaving it entirely up to United to decide exactly when to pull the trigger.
