AS Roma have made an initial approach to sign Yannick Ferreira Carrasco on a loan deal this January.
The 32-year-old Belgian winger is currently at Al Shabab, where he has been a standout performer in the Saudi Pro League, netting 7 goals and providing 3 assists so far this season.
Despite his strong form in Riyadh, Carrasco is reportedly keen on a return to Europe to secure his place in the Belgium squad for the 2026 World Cup.
The Current Stalemate
- Roma’s Move: Gian Piero Gasperini is seeking experienced attacking depth following injuries to Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk. Roma have reportedly made a verbal loan offer, but are waiting for a breakthrough.
- Al Shabab’s Stance: The Saudi club is not currently “opening the doors” for an exit. Carrasco is the team captain and a vital part of their project; Al Shabab previously denied exit rumors in the summer and remains firm on keeping him unless a significant offer arrives.
- Napoli Interest: Antonio Conte’s Napoli also requested information on Carrasco’s situation weeks ago, though they have yet to follow up with a formal proposal.
The Financial Hurdle
Carrasco currently earns a staggering €13 million net per season. For any move to Italy to materialize, the winger would need to accept a drastic pay cut—reportedly up to 60–70%—to fit within Roma’s wage structure.
While Roma remain “keen and waiting,” the deal is entirely dependent on Al Shabab softening their stance in the final days of the window.
