The “Working Class Hero” of Anfield is moving on. On Thursday, April 9, 2026, Liverpool FC officially announced that Andy Robertson will depart the club when his contract expires at the end of the current 2025–26 season.

Andy Robertson to Leave Liverpool as a Free Agent; End of a Nine-Year Legacy

Following in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah, Robertson becomes the second legendary figure of the Jürgen Klopp era to confirm his exit as a free agent this summer.

The Decision: “Now is the Time”

The 32-year-old Scotland captain addressed his departure in a sit-down interview with the club’s media channel, acknowledging that while it is difficult to leave, the arrival of Milos Kerkez—who has taken the starting left-back role this season—made the timing feel right.

“It’s never easy leaving a club like Liverpool. It has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years,” Robertson said. “But I know football moves on, I know teams move on, and I think now is the time for me to move on and go wherever my career takes me next.”

A Trophy-Laden Nine Years

Robertson departs as a bona-fide Liverpool legend. Since his bargain £8 million arrival from Hull City in 2017, he has been the engine of the team’s left flank:

  • Appearances: 373 (to date)
  • Honors: 2 Premier League titles, 1 Champions League, 1 FA Cup, 2 League Cups, 1 FIFA Club World Cup, and 1 UEFA Super Cup.
  • Creativity: Amassed 69 assists, forming one of the most iconic full-back pairings in football history alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Where Next for “Robbo”?

As one of the most experienced left-backs in Europe entering free agency, the race for his signature is already heating up:

  • Tottenham Hotspur: Currently the favorites to sign him, though reports suggest a deal may depend on Spurs securing their Premier League status for next season.
  • The Italian Interest: Both Juventus and Napoli have expressed serious interest, with Luciano Spalletti reportedly keen to bring Robertson’s “intensity and leadership” to Turin.
  • Atletico Madrid: Diego Simeone remains an admirer, having reportedly seen a bid for the Scot rejected just last summer.

The Final Push

Despite the announcement, Robertson remains “fully focused” on the final weeks of the campaign.

Liverpool are currently pushing for a top-four finish and face a massive uphill battle against PSG in the Champions League quarter-final second leg next week.

Anfield is expected to give Robertson a hero’s farewell during the final home game of the season against Brighton on May 17.
