LONDON — England’s squad for the October international break has undergone a late change after Chelsea captain Reece James was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The setback opens the door for a first-ever senior international call-up for Manchester City’s highly-rated defender, Nico O’Reilly.
The 20-year-old O’Reilly has been officially drafted into the men’s senior squad from the Under-21s, following an impressive start to the season with Manchester City.
James Returns to Chelsea for Assessment
Reece James sustained the injury while playing for Chelsea against Liverpool over the weekend. Following medical assessments, the decision was made for the right-back to withdraw from the Three Lions camp and return to his club to focus on recovery.
While the exact severity and nature of the injury have not been confirmed by the FA, it continues a frustrating trend of fitness issues for the Chelsea defender, who has struggled for a consistent run of games over the last two years.
Maiden Call-Up for O’Reilly
The injury to James has been immediately countered by the promotion of Nico O’Reilly.
- Club Form: The versatile 20-year-old, a product of the Manchester City academy, has featured prominently for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, making a significant impact across all competitions. He is capable of playing at full-back or in central midfield.
- England Future: O’Reilly has represented England at various youth levels from Under-15s to Under-20s, and this call-up marks a major milestone in his burgeoning career.
He will now join the senior squad as they prepare for a busy international window, which includes a friendly against Wales and a World Cup qualifier against Latvia.
