Ilkay Gündogan Joins Galatasaray on Free Transfer from Manchester City

ISTANBUL, TURKEY – Galatasaray has completed the signing of veteran midfielder Ilkay Gündogan, who joins the Turkish club on a free transfer from Manchester City.

The 34-year-old’s move brings to an end his second spell at the Etihad Stadium, and he is set to begin a new chapter in his career in Istanbul.

Gündogan initially departed City for Barcelona in 2023 following the club’s historic treble-winning season, before rejoining the Blues for the 2024/25 campaign.

After a single season back in the Premier League, he is now on the move again, this time to the Turkish Super Lig champions, a country that holds significant meaning for him and his family.

For Galatasaray, the acquisition of a player of Gündogan’s caliber is a major coup, adding a world-class midfielder with a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to their squad.

The deal is a statement of intent as the club looks to strengthen for both domestic and European competitions.

In a statement, Gündogan expressed his gratitude to Manchester City, saying the club will “always hold a special place in my heart.”

He leaves as a club legend, having won 14 trophies in his two stints with the club, and will be watching from afar as he begins his new adventure in Turkey.
