Erik ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, is reportedly making significant progress in talks to become the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.
Sources indicate that direct contact between the Dutch tactician and the Bundesliga club took place earlier this week, with Ten Hag expressing his “total availability” for the role.
Leverkusen is in the market for a new manager following Xabi Alonso’s confirmed departure to Real Madrid.
While other candidates, including Cesc Fabregas, have been linked, it appears Ten Hag has emerged as a very strong contender, potentially even being their primary target if Fabregas’s move to Como is not confirmed.
Ten Hag has been out of management since being sacked by Manchester United in October 2024, despite leading them to Carabao Cup success in 2023 and an FA Cup triumph in 2024.
His previous successes with Ajax, where he won multiple Eredivisie titles and reached a Champions League semi-final, highlight his pedigree.
He also has prior experience in German football, having coached Bayern Munich II.
This potential move would see Ten Hag return to the dugout in a highly competitive league, taking over a team that has performed exceptionally well under Alonso.
