Michael Carrick is facing a full-blown defensive emergency ahead of Manchester United’s pivotal Premier League clash against Chelsea this Saturday, April 18, 2026.

The Red Devils will be missing all three of their primary central defensive options for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Defensive Crisis: Manchester United Face Chelsea Without Yoro, Maguire, and Martínez

The Current Situation

  • Leny Yoro: The French teenager has been ruled out of the Chelsea match after suffering an undisclosed injury during training. He did not travel with the squad to London, and there are growing fears that the injury could sideline him for the remainder of the season.
  • Harry Maguire: The defender is serving an additional one-game suspension. This follows his red card against Bournemouth, after which his ban was extended by the FA for improper conduct toward the fourth official.
  • Lisandro Martínez: The Argentine is set to serve the first of a three-match suspension following his straight red card—for an altercation involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin—during Monday night’s defeat to Leeds United.

Carrick’s “Selection Headache”

With Matthijs de Ligt also remaining a long-term absentee (having not featured since November due to a back injury), Carrick is left with an extremely thin defensive line.

Reports suggest that young defender Ayden Heaven is the most likely candidate to start alongside an improvised partner.

Carrick has publicly backed Heaven, stating that the youngster is “in a good place” despite the high-stakes nature of the fixture.

Noussair Mazraoui and Luke Shaw have been cited as potential emergency options in a back-three formation, though the manager’s final tactical decision remains to be seen.
