MANCHESTER — Following a whirlwind week as caretaker manager, Darren Fletcher is set to return to his permanent role as Head Coach of the Manchester United Under-18s.

The move signals that the club is ready to finalize the appointment of Michael Carrick as the interim manager for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
Fletcher, who took charge following Rúben
Amorim’s departure last Monday, led the first team through a transitional week that saw a 2-2 draw with Burnley and a disappointing 2-1 FA Cup exit to Brighton.
Steadying the Ship
Fletcher was thrust into the spotlight with little preparation but earned praise for his professionalism during a “surreal” period. Despite the results on the pitch, he succeeded in:
- Integrating Youth: Giving a high-profile cameo to 18-year-old Shea Lacey against Burnley.
- Restoring Morale: Reintroducing senior figures like Bruno Fernandes into the fold.
- Providing Continuity: Acting as the bridge between the Amorim era and the incoming Carrick regime.
The Return to the Academy
Fletcher’s return to the U18s is a key part of INEOS’s long-term strategy. Appointed to the youth role in July 2025, Fletcher is viewed as essential for maintaining the “Carrington pipeline” that has seen players like Mainoo and Garnacho flourish.
“I have given it my best, and I am disappointed not to win a game,” Fletcher admitted after the Brighton defeat. “But it is a massive responsibility to lead this club, and I’m ready to get back to helping the next generation.”
