BRIGHTON, UK – Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba has opened up about the intense transfer speculation linking him with a blockbuster move to Manchester United, admitting that while the rumors didn’t “affect” him directly, the resulting pressure has weighed heavily on his performances this season.

The 21-year-old Cameroon international was a primary target for United during the summer 2025 window, with reports suggesting a potential £100 million (€115m) deal was discussed before negotiations stalled over Brighton’s valuation.
Speaking to Sky Sports News following a challenging start to the 2025/26 campaign, Baleba addressed the dip in form that has seen him substituted early in several matches by manager Fabian Hürzeler.
“I Put Too Much Pressure on Myself”
Baleba was candid about the internal struggle to live up to the “big hype” following his breakout debut season:
- On the Rumors: “I do not think it [the transfer speculation] affected me. But I had a lot of pressure on me.”
- On Performance Levels: “When I started this season, I wanted to have the same performances as last season. Every day I try to work hard and to get back to my level.”
- On the Mental Struggle: “Did I put too much pressure on myself? Yes, I think so, but I think that’s good. It’s good for me because now I have to get through this slightly stressful period, get back on the horse and continue working hard.”
What’s Next: January Window Looms
Despite his fluctuating form—having completed 90 minutes only once this term—Baleba remains high on Rubén Amorim’s shortlist for a midfield rebuild.
Sources suggest Brighton may have softened their stance, potentially entertaining offers in the region of €85 million (£74m) as United prepares to move on from Casemiro and handle the potential exit of Kobbie Mainoo.
