AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – Ajax has secured a significant defensive reinforcement, with reports confirming that Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu has reached a verbal agreement to join the club.

The versatile defender, who recently left Arsenal as a free agent due to persistent injury problems, is set to sign a short-term contract with the Eredivisie giants.
The deal is confirmed with the decisive “here we go!” signal, with a contract reportedly valid until June 2026.
This timeframe suggests a short-term ‘prove-it’ agreement, allowing both the club and the player to assess his fitness and performance following a long injury layoff.
Medical Scheduled for Tuesday
Tomiyasu is scheduled to undergo his medical examination on Tuesday. If all goes well, the Japanese defender will officially put pen to paper, marking a new chapter in his career after a frustrating end to his time in North London.
The 27-year-old was a key player for Arsenal before a debilitating run of knee and muscular injuries forced him to agree to a mutual contract termination in July 2025.
reportedly told Japanese media at the time that the move was a “peaceful departure” that would allow him to focus entirely on his rehabilitation and finding a place where he could play consistently.
The move to Ajax, who are currently fourth in the Eredivisie and struggling defensively, offers Tomiyasu a high-profile platform to regain fitness and playing time, which is crucial for his ambition to secure a spot in Japan’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
