VfL Wolfsburg Sacks Coach Paul Simonis Amid Crisis

The decision was communicated to the 40-year-old Dutchman in the past few hours, marking the end of his short and turbulent tenure at the Bundesliga club.

Catastrophic Form Forces The Club’s Hand

Simonis’s dismissal follows a disastrous run of form that has plummeted the club toward the relegation zone.

The final straw was Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Werder Bremen, which marked the eighth loss in the club’s past nine matches across all competitions.

The highly-rated coach, who arrived in the summer of 2025 with a reputation for winning the Dutch Cup with Go Ahead Eagles, failed to translate his success to the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg currently sits in a deeply disappointing 14th place in the table after 10 matchdays, with just 8 points, far below the expectations for their talented squad.

They were also eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by lower-league opposition.

Search for Successor Underway

The club hierarchy, including Technical Director Sebastian Schindzielorz and CEO Peter Christiansen, is now actively working to secure a replacement.

Reports suggest that initial talks with potential successors are already taking place in the background, as the club aims to utilize the upcoming international break to install a new manager and prepare the team for a vital turnaround.

For the immediate future, reports from Germany suggest that U19 coach Daniel Bauer could take over the first team on an interim basis to cover the gap while the search for a permanent solution is finalized.

Simonis is the latest in a string of coaches who have been unable to stabilize the Volkswagen-backed club since 2021.
