The deal brings the 27-year-old back to the Premier League and provides crucial backup and competition for first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Ramsdale, who has previously played for Arsenal, Bournemouth, and Sheffield United, spent a challenging 2024-25 season with Southampton, which ended in the club’s relegation to the Championship.

Despite conceding more goals than any other Premier League goalkeeper last season, he made the second-most saves in the league (125).

The agreement between the two clubs includes an option to buy next summer, giving Newcastle the flexibility to make the deal permanent should Ramsdale impress.

The Magpies had turned their attention to Ramsdale after missing out on their primary target, James Trafford, who re-signed for Manchester City.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Ramsdale expressed his delight at the move, saying, “I’ve got the kit on, it’s got the nice Champions League badge on the sleeve and I’m delighted to be here.”

He also highlighted his positive history with St. Newcastle Sign Aaron Ramsdale on Loan from Southampton James’ Park and his reunion with manager Eddie Howe, who gave him his Premier League debut at Bournemouth.

Ramsdale’s arrival marks Newcastle’s third senior signing of the summer, following Anthony Elanga and Antonito Cordero.

His experience and quality are expected to be valuable as the club prepares for a demanding campaign that includes Champions League football.
