Madrid, Spain – Atlético Madrid have officially completed the signing of Argentine World Cup winner Thiago Almada from Brazilian side Botafogo.

Atlético Madrid Lands Thiago Almada in €21M Deal for 50% Rights

The deal sees the Spanish club pay a fee of approximately €21 million for 50% of the attacking midfielder’s economic rights.

The 24-year-old, who spent the latter half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Olympique Lyonnais, has reportedly signed a long-term contract with Atlético Madrid, expected to run until 2030.

Almada’s strong desire to play under compatriot Diego Simeone was a decisive factor in his preference for the Rojiblancos, despite significant interest from other European clubs like Benfica and Zenit St. Petersburg.

This complex transfer involving “economic rights” rather than a full outright purchase of the player’s registration reflects the multi-club ownership model of Eagle Football, which owns both Botafogo and Olympique Lyonnais.

While Almada’s sporting rights are now fully with Atlético Madrid, the shared economic rights mean that Botafogo (or rather, the John Textor-led Eagle Football group) will retain a significant stake in any future transfer fee should Almada move on from Atlético.

Reports suggest the total valuation of Almada’s full economic rights is around €40 million, with Atlético having an obligation to buy the remaining 50% for around €10 million if he isn’t sold within the next three years.

Almada, a dynamic playmaker capable of operating centrally or out wide, is expected to inject creativity and flair into Simeone’s squad. He adds to Atlético’s growing South American contingent and is seen as a key long-term investment.

His arrival follows earlier summer signings like Álex Baena and Johnny Cardoso, further strengthening Atlético’s midfield ahead of the new season.

The confirmation of this deal brings an end to weeks of intense negotiations and speculation, marking one of the most intriguing transfers of the summer window.

Atlético Madrid fans will be eager to see their new Argentine star in action.
