The Dutch international right-back has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, becoming the Reds’ first major signing of the summer transfer window.

The transfer comes as Liverpool moved swiftly to activate a release clause in Frimpong’s contract. He underwent his medical earlier in the month, with personal terms quickly agreed upon.

The €35 million fee will reportedly be paid in three installments over three years.

Frimpong’s arrival comes as a direct response to the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has joined Real Madrid.

While Conor Bradley recently signed a new contract and is seen as a strong contender for the first-choice right-back spot, Frimpong offers elite attacking output and versatility, capable of playing as a right wing-back or even a right winger.

The 24-year-old was a pivotal figure in Xabi Alonso’s historic unbeaten Bundesliga-winning side in the 2023/24 season, demonstrating his blistering pace, direct running, and impressive end product with 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances over five seasons at Leverkusen.

His ability to contribute significantly in the final third will undoubtedly add a new dimension to Arne Slot’s Liverpool squad.

Having previously been part of Manchester City’s academy, Frimpong qualifies as both a homegrown player in the Premier League and association-trained in the Champions League.

He is also fluent in English, which should aid his seamless transition to life at Anfield. Frimpong joins a growing Dutch contingent at Liverpool, including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

“I’m just excited to be here,” Frimpong said upon the announcement. “Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

Liverpool’s swift action in securing Frimpong signals a clear intent for a busy summer as they look to build on their recent success and prepare for challenges including the FIFA Club World Cup.

The club is also reportedly in advanced talks to sign Frimpong’s former Leverkusen teammate, Florian Wirtz.
